The Department of Education of Oberlin College has its origins in the Teacher's Department of Oberlin Collegiate Institute, created in 1846. In 1903, the Department of Pedagogy, previously subsumed by the Philosophy Department, became independent; its name was changed to the Department of Education in 1909.
